Advanced Tactical Medicine
Prerequisites: Have successfully completed the Basic Tactical Medicine Course or hold current licensure as an Advanced Life Support Health care worker (Paramedic, RN, MD, etc.).
This sixteen-hour course builds upon the basic principles taught in the Basic Tactical Medicine course. The student will learn basic and intermediate trauma care techniques.
The Advanced Tactical Medical course will include the curriculum for International Trauma Life Support. The ITLS framework is a global standard that enables you to master the latest techniques in rapid assessment, appropriate intervention and identification of immediate life-threatening injuries. Personnel that complete all segments of the Advanced Tactical Medicine advance curriculum will be awarded an “International Trauma Life Support provider” level certification that will remain valid for up to three years.*
There will be written exam as well as practical trauma assessment and skills evaluations. The course will culminate in a scenario wherein the student will work with a two-person entry team to locate, extract, assess and provide treatment to a victim of trauma.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course the successful student will be able to:
+ Evaluate Kinematics of Trauma.
+ Evaluate and treat Basic Ballistics and Blast Injury wounds.
+ Perform an Initial and Detailed Trauma Assessment.
+ Recognize and treat for Shock (Including Hemorrhage control and Fluid Resuscitation Concepts).
+ Be familiar with Triage concepts and operations.
+ Differentiate between Cover and Concealment and Provide care across a barricade.
+ Be familiar with Patient Movement, Stabilization and Transport techniques.
+ Be familiar with rapid extraction techniques to minimize the exposure risk to the victim and the “rescue” personnel.
+ Be familiar with techniques used to provide care under fire and ways to approach and minimize hostile environments.
+ Be familiar with Basic principles of providing support to a Tactical Entry Team.

+ Students who do not already own the text “ITLS for Emergency Care Providers, 7th Edition” through the Basic Tactical Medicine course, or who do not already own a copy will be required to purchase the text for the Advanced Tactical Medicine course at a cost of $59.00.

+++ The lessons are derived from years of full time paramedic street applications and the study of trauma care. The primary instructor has over 25 years experience as a Fire Department Paramedic – starting as a Basic Combat Field Medic for the U.S. Army – and including more than ten years as a Flight Paramedic for rescue helicopters and several additional years as a Medical Crew member for high speed race events such as NASCAR, IRL and CART.
+ Note- Being taught medical skills in this course DOES NOT allow you to operate outside of legal statute. However basic these skill sets are, FTA and its instructors cannot certify or license you to operate outside of your medical scope of practice!
